Stability of Augmented System Factorizations in Interior-point Methods

چکیده

Some implementations of interior-point algorithms obtain their search directions by solving symmetric indeenite systems of linear equations. The conditioning of the coeecient matrices in these so-called augmentedsystems deteriorateson later iterations, as some of the diagonal elements grow without bound. Despite this apparent diiculty, the steps produced by standard factorization procedures are often accurate enough to allow the interior-point method to converge to high accuracy. When the underlying linear program is nondegenerate, we show that convergence to arbitrarily high accuracy occurs, at a rate that closely approximates the theory. We also explain and demonstrate what happens when the linear program is degenerate, where convergence to acceptable accuracy (but not arbitrarily high accuracy) is usually obtained.

Solving Second Order Cone Programming via a Reduced Augmented System Approach

The standard Schur complement equation based implementation of interior-point methods for second order cone programming may encounter stability problems in the computation of search directions, and as a consequence, accurate approximate optimal solutions are sometimes not attainable. Based on the eigenvalue decomposition of the (1, 1) block of the augmented equation, a reduced augmented equatio...

Efficient solution of two-stage stochastic linear programs using interior point methods

Solving deterministic equivalent formulations of two-stage stochastic linear programs using interior point methods may be computationally diflicult due to the need to factorize quite dense search direction matrices (e.g., AAT). Several methods for improving the algorithmic efficiency of interior point algorithms by reducing the density of these matrices have been proposed in the literature. Ref...

Solving symmetric indefinite systems in an interior-point method for second order cone programming

Many optimization problems can be formulated as second order cone programming (SOCP) problems. Theoretical results show that applying interior-point method (IPM) to SOCP has global polynomial convergence. However, various stability issues arise in the implementation of IPM. The standard normal equation based implementation of IPM encounters stability problems in the computation of search direct...

Interpretation of interior point methods as damped Newton methods

We propose a unified framework for the update of the barrier parameter in interior-point methods for nonlinear programming. The original primal-dual system is augmented to incorporate explicitly an updating function. We analyze local convergence properties and recover known updating strategies as special cases. We report numerical experiments on nonlinear problems and compare our results to a s...
